Interactive notebooks can be an intimidating activity to introduce – especially in Kindergarten! These print and go one page CVC Word Family Interactive Notebooks will provide you with differentiated activities that you can use a variety of ways! I personally love using these Interactive Notebooks for assessments, morning work, small group work, and teacher time.
Word Families Included in the product:
Short a: -ag, -at, -ap, -ad, -am, -an, -ab
Short e: -ed, -en, -et
Short i: -it, -ix, -ip, -id, -ib, -ig, -in
Short o: -ob, -ox, -om, -og, -ot, -op,
Short u: -um, -un, -ub, -up, -ud, -ug, -ut
I recommend starting small and expanding the activity once students show you that they are ready. The picture on the left was the first day we started notebooks. I gave each student the (print and go) page, and told them to color the pictures, find the –ab words, and unscramble the sentence. That was all we could handle that first day. I spent my time walking around and checking in with the students to make sure that they understood exactly what to do. The sentence scramble was the higher level activity but I took my time with them to make sure that they fully understood how each activity needed to be completed. The next day, we cut and glued. I actually created an example IN entry for them to look at and reference so that they could see where to glue down each piece.
After about a week of practice, the students were able to complete the entire activity – color, cut, gluing, and writing, in about 45 minutes. I like to try and complete 2 IN activities a week and love putting our IN’s out during Open House for parents to see!
One page that is formatted for an easy print and go option. The same format for each word family, makes it predictable for your students!
There are a variety of ways you can use IN’s and I’m going to name just a few!
First of all, just a side note about why I use IN’s in class. I personally love using them for assessments. I can easily pull an IN and a student, open it up to a concept, and quiz them on something that they’ve already done. In this case, I could turn to a word family, and ask them to write a sentence with an –ab word or ask them for a rhyming word, or even ask the to spell certain –ab words.
